Singapore’s immigration system caters for both immigrant and non-immigrant entry.
As a non-immigrant your stay will fall into one of three categories:

Working in Singapore

Employment pass (EP) – is a type of work visa issued to foreign professional employees, managers, and owners/directors of Singapore companies. There is no quota system limiting the number of Employment Passes that can be issued to a company. The Employment Pass (EP) is normally issued for 1-2 years at a time and renewable thereafter. An EP enables you to work and live in Singapore, and travel in and out of the country freely without applying for Singapore entry visas. Possessing an EP also opens the door for potential Singapore permanent residence in due course. For eligibility requirements contact TSS Immigration for more information.

Note that the grant of an Employment Pass is purely discretionary. Qualifications and qualifying salaries have been tightened in recent years, and the Ministry of Manpower retains its flexibility to consider applicants on a case-by-case basis. Also note that renewal applications must be filed before the existing pass expires or it will not be considered a renewal.

There are varied employment passes and criteria – see here for full details.

Visiting Singapore
Visit pass - can be obtained upon arrival for business and social visits up to 90 days. For tourism purposes, Australian passport holders do not need to apply for a visa for entry into Singapore, but must fulfill the following requirements:
• A passport with at least 6 months’ validity at the intended date of arrival in Singapore
• Sufficient funds to last for the intended period of stay in Singapore
• Confirmed onward/return tickets (where applicable)
• Entry facilities to their onward destinations, e.g. visas.
• Completed Disembarkation/Embarkation Card
• Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate, if applicable

Possession of a visa does not entitle a foreigner to enter Singapore automatically. The grant of a visit pass to a foreign visitor is determined by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) at the Singapore checkpoints and each case is considered on its own merits.
All visitors on visit passes are not permitted to engage in any form of business, profession, occupation or paid employment while in Singapore
The following countries will require a visa to enter Singapore.

Studying in Singapore
Student pass - foreigners pursuing full time study in Singapore can apply for a pass to remain in Singapore.
